In the Word of Wisdom, the Lord commands Mormons to abstain from harmful substances. Mormons are taught not to drink alcohol (see D&C 89:5–7). Mormons were also taught not to drink “hot drinks,” that is, coffee or tea other than herbal teas (see D&C 89:9), and not to consume tobacco (see D&C 89:8). Modern prophets have also taught that Mormons should abstain from illicit drugs and abuse of legal drugs (For the Strength of Youth , 26). I`m sorry the experience was confusing for you, Linda. The Church has allocated zones to each congregation. It`s not legalistic and no one would ever get mad at you if you participated in the wrong one, but it`s just one way to help organize things. I`m sure the missionary just wanted you to know that there was another church near you that would like to see you there, but I can easily understand how you felt when you were expelled. I am very sorry about that. Could I help you get in touch with this other church to see if it suits you better? The Word of Wisdom is a section of the Doctrine and Covenants, one of four volumes of the Church. Mormons believe that God revealed in 1833 the foods and substances that are good and bad for mankind. Alcohol, tobacco, tea and coffee were prohibited. It`s good that you come to church.
Samson will surely give you a punch and a nod when you meet j/k in the afterlife 🙂. We take all the newcomers. It is true that Mormons adhere to a health code called the Word of Wisdom. But rather than looking at the Word of Wisdom simply as a set of rules or a list of do`s and don`ts, Mormons view the Word of Wisdom as a revelation of God giving His advice on how to live a healthy life. Teas like chamomile and peppermint fall into this category. You can generally assume that if a tea is labeled as a decaffeinated vegetable tea, it does not come from the tea plant and should be acceptable. Full-time female missionaries learn to follow these rules for hair: “The style and length of your hair should be easy to manage and not draw attention to yourself.” Brother McKinley, McKinley, Book of Mormon, Turn It Out Thank you. I was baptized in church on February 1 and I still feel like I should wear a robe to church.
Sometimes I multitask in one day and a 30-minute ride to change just isn`t in the plans. I can only hope that my pupils will welcome me in jeans, as I sometimes are when I pass by. I`m not very interested in women`s fashion, but write to my wife Emily at 208.963.2980 and she can answer your questions. Nicole, thank you for your message. I understand that I want to adapt, but you also have to know that every new person goes through the same questions. As soon as they decide to run, all these fears disappear. You will be so warmly welcomed, no matter what you wear. What you`re wearing is the LAST thing you should worry about.
I found this helpful, so thank you! My husband and I are going to move to Utah and I know it`s the dominant religion, and since I don`t belong to any particular religion, I don`t want to be considered offensive. Thanks again.
